Jon Huntsman and the 2012 Republican Primary

Jon Huntsman, former Governor of Utah and GOP presidential candidate, made the disappointing comment on Thursday in an interview ABC’s George Stephanopoulos that he “wouldv’e voted for [the Paul Ryan budget plan], including the Medicare provisions.” I doubt the sincerity of his words, not because I think he is an insincere person, but because I am confident he is not an asshole. This is one of Huntsman’s largest assets (tee hee, ass-ets) but may also be his downfall.

A quick disclaimer is necessary: I am a resident of Utah and I love Jon Huntsman.

In a Republican party that treasures their assholes (Palin, Beck, Rove), can a non-asshole win? There is a great article over at Salon about the trouble Huntsman might encounter being a reasonable Republican in an unreasonable field. I recommend it.

The political climate in the Republican party is not one in which a moderate will be quickly embraced, although a dose of moderation may be exactly what the doctor ordered for the GOP. Newt Gingrich recently got a taste of what it is like to insert an ounce of moderation into a Republican presidential campaign. Throughout this primary season the GOP has had great difficulty finding a viable candidate that will apply to independent voters as well as their far right base and FOXNews fundraisers. Mitch Daniels bowed out of the race recently leaving another wedge of moderate Republican pie for Huntsman to dunk his thumb in.
